She practiced as a homebirth midwife for over 15 years and currently provides primary health care as a family nurse practitioner in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Mary Lou studied herbalism with Michael Moore and Tieraona Low Dog in the early 1990s. She has been teaching herbalism, midwifery and permaculture for the past 20 years.
